Cutting a metal curtain pole at home is straightforward if you take your time and use the right tools. Follow the steps below carefully for a neat, accurate result.
Tools You Will Need
- Metal tape measure
- Pencil
- Masking tape
- Hacksaw (suitable for cutting metal)
Step-by-Step Instructions
Measure Carefully
Use a metal tape measure to measure the exact finished length you need for your curtain pole. Double-check the measurement before marking — it’s always best to measure twice and cut once.
Mark the Cutting Line
Lightly mark the cutting point with a pencil. Make the mark clear but not too heavy, as it will only be used as a guide.
Apply Masking Tape
Wrap a strip of masking tape around the pole, lining the edge of the tape up exactly with your pencil mark.
The tape creates a clear, straight saw guide all the way around the pole.
It also helps protect the pole’s finish if the hacksaw slips during cutting.
Secure the Pole
Place the pole on a stable surface. If possible, secure it so it cannot roll or move while cutting. Ensure the section to be cut off extends slightly over the edge of the surface.
Start Cutting
Using the hacksaw, begin cutting gently along the edge of the masking tape.
Use slow, steady strokes and let the saw do the work.
Keep the blade straight and follow the tape line all the way around the pole.
Complete the Cut
Continue sawing until the pole is fully cut through. Take extra care as you near the end of the cut to avoid sudden movement or chipping.
Remove Tape and Check Finish
Carefully remove the masking tape and inspect the cut end. The tape should have helped keep the finish clean and scratch-free.
